Health care insurance is one of the hottest topics in Washington right now. Although everyone seems to agree that change in our current health care system is needed, there is no consensus on how the country should proceed to achieve the desired results. If you have an interest in effecting important change on health care reform, an internship with The Health Policy Department can provide an opportunity to advocate for individuals who are currently uninsured and are living at low-income levels.

Families USA is an organization that brings the voice of low-income health care consumers to health policy debates. The Health Policy Department provides the analytical support for all of Families USA’s federal and state health care advocacy work. An internship with The Health Policy Department is an opportunity to research current health care access and affordability. Interns are treated like full-time employees and take part in every aspect of researching and assisting with the writing of briefs. Interns are also expected to take part in regular staff meetings and become an active part of the DC political community.

The federal government has numerous opportunities available for current students and new graduates. If government jobs are of interest, securing an internship with one of the many organizations and/or agencies could be the first step to landing a full-time job. If Washington DC is a location you could see yourself working in, trying to land an internship prior to graduation could definitely be the first step in the right direction.
