CSU-Global Campus was a proud sponsor of the Business Marketing Association’s “student resume review” workshop this morning at our facilities in the DTC. Students from CU Boulder, UNC, CSU Fort Collins, Regis and DU all participated.

Full-time marketing students had the opportunity to have their resumes reviewed by marketing professionals. Participants also brushed up on their interviewing skills by sitting in on a series of panel interviews where they faced real-world questions from local business leaders. The top three interviewees received cash prizes worth $300 (first prize), $200 (second prize) and $100 (third prize).

Immediately following the workshop, attendees headed over to the DTC Sheraton to hear keynote speaker Howard Behar, the former president of Starbucks Coffee Company North America, Starbucks Coffee International and author of It’s Not About the Coffee: Leadership Principles from a Life at Starbucks.

Howard joined Starbucks in 1989 and helped grow the retail business from 28 stores to more than 400 stores by the time he was named president of Starbucks Coffee International in 1995. He retired in 2003. During his many years as the president of Starbucks, Howard helped establish the Starbucks culture, which stresses the importance of people over profits. He coached hundreds of leaders at every level and helped the company grow into a world-renowned brand.

CSU-Global Campus offers an undergraduate and graduate level degree in Organizational Leadership. This particular type of degree is well sought out and for good reason. Organizations need excellent leaders. This ties in perfectly with Howard’s presentation today. His emphasis on the importance of organization leaders to not hide behind their legal and PR teams, but focus instead on the people – employees and customers – resonated quite well with the 250+ luncheon attendees. Howard’s passion for this topic has become his life’s work. We consider ourselves fortunate to have been in attendance at this powerful presentation.

Most people hate job hunting especially writing resumes. But I have found having highly targeted cover letter is crucial to getting your resume read. Better cover letters get interviews – not always better qualifications!
