Is Distance Learning the Right Fit For You?
Many people want to continue their education, but have to work full time to support themselves. Finances make it impossible to leave your full-time job, but how then, can you advance in your career?
One advantage of a distance learning program is the price difference compared to attending an equal college in person. Since you won’t be on campus, fees such as parking, lab, and even certain vaccinations are not required. Overall you’ll find that you pay fewer fees making your cost to attend lower.
Distance learning colleges not only offer low budgeted education but they are also quite elastic for the part time students. Now it is in your hand to select the number of credits per semester on your own.
Even if your schedule only allows for one course at a time, it is doable to do so with most distance learning programs. As the coursework is individual, students can regularly decide their own pace. However, there are deadlines for tests and quizzes. This ensures that students progress toward their eventual degree.
Don’t think that distance learning programs are less rigorous than traditional programs. Before your first class you will have to take the same type of placement tests that traditional students take. You may have to take these initial tests on campus, but the time you spend will be far less compared to a traditional program.
The entry process and other procedures like fee submission in distance learning colleges are much similar to any other college which accomplishes regular classes. Not only you have to give them your earlier transcripts but you have to confirm the fact that you are a high school graduate.
If it has been several years since you graduated high school, testing will uncover which areas you are weak in. Just as in a traditional college, you will have the opportunity to take remedial courses to get you up to speed. In fact, taking a remedial course may be a requirement for you to gain entry into the program.
One caveat — when selecting your distance learning program, check into the school’s credentials. Make sure the college is accredited by your state’s educational body. Due diligence will make sure you don’t waste your money and time.
What about you? What do you think?
