College textbooks make the move to the Kindle

Textbooks becoming available on Amazon’s Kindle

It only makes sense that college textbooks are converted to be viewed on mobile devices. Today, the Wall Street Journal reported that there’s a ‘bigger’ version of the Kindle being released tomorrow. In addition, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland plans to utilize the product this Fall and compare student’s experiences with the Kindles to those who use textbooks.

In the past the biggest criticism of the Kindle was that it was difficult to view charts and graphs on a six inch screen. The new and improved model which launches tomorrow will be much bigger. According to PC World today, the new Kindle dubbed as the DX, “will also have the ability to make notes and highlights on your documents while the 9.7-inch screen (3.7-inch larger than on the Kindle 2) will be optimal for viewing newspapers, magazines and textbooks in a format similar to their paper predecessor.”

This is exciting news for education as a whole. Perhaps it progressed quicker due to Oprah’s request to Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon.com to replace the heavy backpacks filled with textbooks the students carry at her school in Africa.  Regardless of how and why, the fact is that the Kindle is getting bigger and better and it’s only going to help lifelong learners have immediate access to all of the resources they need.
